SELF DEFENSE
Kyukido Martial Arts
Hapkido is a Soft Defensive Art,
This art has been nicknamed the Self Defense Art. Those who pursue this art,
do so with the understanding that they have a chance in their home and
in their communities. This art answers the question "what are we going to do
to prevent people from becoming victims of attack?". Learn what you will do,
then help those who don't know what to do.
Hapkido means: "The way of Harmony"
The techniques of Hapki-Do provide the student an effective method of defense
that does not require permanently damaging another person. The techniques of
Hapki-Do are very similar to the those of the Japanese art of Aikido.
Self defense using the kicks and strikes of Taekwon Do is certainly effective,
but in many cases uncalled for. It is not unusual in the US for a person to be
sued for assault when in reality they were just defending themselves. In
today's sue crazy society it is important to learn ways of dealing with an
attacker that utilize a low level of force.
Imagine a scenario: a young boy takes a swing at an adult, a drunk starts
thumping on your chest or a friend sneaks up on you unexpectedly, trying to scare you.
In these situations, using strikes to defend yourself
may not be the best solution. This is where using the techniques of Hapki-Do will be
more suitable and will change the way people commonly view Martial Arts.
Children using Hard Style Martial Arts in school during a confrontation will easily get expelled.
Using Hapkido to control or escape from the "Bully", will give him or her a better chance in
the Principals office.
Through the use of joint locks and pain compliance techniques, we can control an unruly
individual without having to resort to potentially crippling kicks and strikes.
Hapki-do essentially provides you a nicer way to handle your attacker when needed.
"To be kind to your attacker is to be cruel to yourself." - Dr. Yang Jing Ming
